9 delicious Indian restaurants in Portland

Nov 20 2019, 2:00 pm

Finding authentic Indian restaurants can be challenging. The prospect of being faced with generic, vaguely orange-colored curries and soggy samosas is so unsettling that we’ve taken it upon ourselves to curate a list of Indian restaurants in PDX that understand just how diverse, rich, and explosive Indian cuisine can be.

Here are nine restaurants in the city that know Indian food inside out.

The creative lovechild of Falguni Khanna and Rudra Parmar, Maruti offers a delectable selection of Indian classics like Biryani, Samosa Chole, and Kichadi, a soothing Ayurvedic concoction of lentils, rice, ginger, and coconut.

Gandhi Indian Restaurant is inspired by the authentic flavors of Punjab in Northern India. We recommend the potato pakoras and spicy tandoori chicken, all washed down with a tall glass of iced chai.

While most people think of North Indian food when they think of Indian cuisine, Swagat offers a delicious selection of South Indian food, a lesser-known cuisine from the South Asian continent. The rava dosa, a delicious savory crepe made from cream of wheat and rice flour, and idli sambhar, rice dumplings soaked in a spicy lentil stew, are a couple of standouts on the menu.

Tiffin Asha is one of the few places in Portland that offers authentic South Indian cuisine, the kind that’s actually made by South Indian mothers for their children and the kind the writer remembers eating as a child. We’re talking medu Vadas, fried idli wedges with gun powder, appams, and even uttapams!

The Sudra is a vegan restaurant that doesn’t hold back one bit. Their vegan bowls have a cult following. Try their lentil kofta bowl, lentil fried meatballs with roasted cauliflower, kale, onions in a house-made tikka sauce. You won’t regret it.
