Apple closes all stores outside China to fight coronavirus spread

Apple announced Friday it’s closing all its retail stores outside China until March 27 in an effort to halt the global spread of coronavirus.

At the same time, the company announced it’s re-opening its retail stores within China as new coronavirus cases there appear to be leveling off.

“As rates of new infections continue to grow in other places, we’re taking additional steps to protect our team members and customers,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a news release.

The two-week store closures should help decrease human density and increase social distancing, the company said.

Apple staff will still be available for tech support online and over the phone. Customers can also still order products online to be delivered.

As for workers outside of the retail stores, Apple says it’s offering flexible arrangements for office staff and paying business-as-usual wages to all of its employees who are paid by the hour.

With coronavirus on the rise, Oregon Health Authority is reminding individuals who attend events and gatherings to monitor their health for signs and symptoms of COVID-19.
