Admire the breathtaking beauty of Alaska through this virtual tour

Explore the spectacular natural beauty and wilderness of Alaska from the comfort of your home with the National Parks System and Google Earth.

The two entities joined forces to bring nature fans an epic experience while they are currently unable to explore in-person.

The virtual tour of Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska presents users with the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the icy elements on an epic online adventure.

The tour is guided by park ranger Fiona North as she takes users to see a glacier up close and personal and journey 30 feet below into the inside of an icy crevasse. While it may appear still, the ice is continually moving as it flows downhill, North explains.

“A week from now, this place will look completely different,” she said.

As they journey back to the surface, viewers can see how the glacier itself has receded over the years between 2004 and 2016.

Then, viewers are transported to admire the breathtaking Bear Glacier Lagoon, where they can listen to what icebergs sound like underwater. Additionally, they are treated to outstanding footage of a 40-tonne humpback whale breaching out of the water.

Finally, they are treated to a virtual paddle as they glide through the icy waters, marveling at the surrounding glaciers.

Until we are able to go out and explore for ourselves, this virtual tour provides a very welcomed alternative that allows us to travel and adventure while admiring the magnificent natural beauty that Alaska is famous for.
