Trudeau congratulates Biden, calls Harris' win an "inspiration" and "historic milestone"
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau congratulated President-elect Joe Biden and called Kamala Harris’ win an “inspiration” and a “historic milestone” for many in politics.
On Monday, Trudeau first congratulated Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris during his press conference.
“I look forward to working with them both on the challenge and opportunities facing our countries and our world,” he said.
“Canada and the United States have a unique relationship and this bond will always be the strong foundation on which we build our shared future.”

The prime minister also said that Harris’ win is a “historic milestone” and that seeing a Black and South Asian woman being elected is “an inspiration and reminder that everyone’s voice belongs in politics.”
When asked about President Donald Trump not yet conceding to the election results, Trudeau said he has confidence in the American electoral process as it has unfolded.
“I was pleased to congratulate President-elect Biden on the weekend. We will continue to work with the current American administration until January 20 after which we’ll work with the new administration.”
He added that Biden will be his third American president and that during all administrations he has stood up to defend Canadian interests throughout.
While Biden is seen as being a protectionist over the US, Trudeau said that over the last four years the American approach “was very protectionist.”
“We built strategies that have had enormous benefit for Canadians,” he said.
“We pushed back against unfair tariffs against our aluminum workers, we have developed robust ways of developing Canadian interests highlighting advantages for workers and companies to have continued opened access between our two countries.”
The prime minister also noted that Biden’s stance on climate change is a “welcome sign” that environmental action will be a top priority.
