Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is seeing at least one bit of good news during the COVID-19 pandemic — his approval rating has shot up above majority for the first time in nearly two years.

According to an Angus Reid Institute study released on April 22, Trudeau saw a 21-point spike between February and April of this year, potentially the result of his front-and-centre presence during the ongoing health crisis.

The study was conducted between April 15 and 17 with 1,912 Canadian respondents who answered an online survey.

The survey found that of those respondents, 54% stated that they approve of the Prime Minister, 44% stated they disapprove, and 2% said they didn’t know.

This is the first time since June 2018 that Trudeau has seen approval from the majority of survey-takers in an Angus Reid Institute study of this kind, and the last time he had seen an approval rating this high was back in June 2017.

When breaking respondents into categories based on their past voting preference, Trudeau found the approval of 89% of those who voted Liberal, 74% of those who voted NDP, 28% of Bloq Quebecois voters, and just 20% of past CPC voters.

The study also found that female respondents in all three age categories were more likely to approve of the prime minister, while the majority of males of all age groups disapproved.

While another election being called anytime soon is unlikely, the current governing party would evidently have a slight edge on the Conservative Party if the survey respondents were to go to the polls.

The Liberals held a slight advantage in the recent study, with 29% of respondents stating that they’d have their vote, just two points over the Conservative’s 27%.

16% stated that they are not sure who they would support. Among decided voters, the Liberals had a three-point lead over the CPC, at 36% to 33%.
