Here's everything you need to know about Quebec cannabis stores

Oct 16 2018, 10:12 pm

It’s the eve of cannabis legalization across the country and we want to make sure you know how Quebec cannabis stores will run for when you test it out for the first time.

All branches of the SQDC have storefront locations which are situated in areas easily accessible to customers. They are all located away from primary and secondary schools by at least 250 meters (150 meters for the City of Montreal).

Three stores will open in Montreal with nine more in the rest of the province. The online store will only be functional on October 17 where people can order pot and have it shipped by mail.

Much like Beer Stores in Ontario, buyers will have to choose from various strains and then have their order filled out by a store clerk. Clients will be able to choose between dried buds, ground cannabis, pre-rolled joints, cannabis oil, pills or oral spray.

Customers will be allowed to purchase up to 30 grams per visit at varying costs of about $6 to $9 per gram. Each household will be allowed to have up to 150 grams at home that should be stored in a location that is inaccessible to children.

According to an SQDC press release, the stores and employees are designed to promote all cannabis-related information accessible to clients without encouraging consumption.

Assistance will be provided to customers by store advisors who have received training by the SQDC and the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS). The training allowed employees to acquire all the expertise necessary to understand the laws and regulations on cannabis.

The stores are set up in three sections, the first is the reception zone where the age of customers (18 years old and older) is verified and no products are visible. The second area is the ‘advice zone,’ the heart of the store and the spot where information and advisory services are offered from a health and education perspective. Products are presented behind a counter and will not be directly accessible to customers. The third zone, is restricted to clients and is intended for storage only.

The products are offered in three types of cannabis: Indica, Sativa and Hybrid and come in several varieties, each giving off a different effect. The prices of the products are competitive and reflect their quality and traceability. No edible products will be available, as stated by the provincial and federal law.
