Halifax implements smoking ban ahead of cannabis legalization

Halifax’s municipal smoking ban came into effect today, just two days before the federal legalization of adult-use cannabis.

In late July, the Halifax Regional Council voted in favour of a new bylaw to restrict all forms of smoking and vaping on municipal property.

This includes areas such as provincial parks and beaches, within nine metres of public trails, and within two metres of playgrounds and sport and recreation events or venues.

Fines for breaking the bylaw range from $25 to $2000 dollars.

The city’s online map of designated areas currently lists nine places were smoking of both tobacco and cannabis will be permitted, with more areas expected to be listed by the end of the week.
