Here is what's open and closed in Montreal on Thanksgiving Monday

Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful to your family and friends and to celebrate the harvest. We’re rewarded with a statutory holiday on Monday, some decent weather and a slew of great events all weekend.

On Monday, October 8, many businesses shut down but not everything comes to a grinding halt.

Many stores stay open on Thanksgiving Monday, more than most other stat holidays. Great news for those of you doing some Monday shopping for last minute bird stuffing.

What’s Open:

• 311, the city of Montreal’s information hotline
• Most dépanneurs
• Most shopping malls, including all downtown Montreal shopping malls, with the exception of Westmount Square which is closed
• Pharmacies can remain open at their discretion, hours may be reduced
• Grocery stores of any size can remain open at their leisure (unlike with other statutory holidays, provincial law allows large surface supermarkets the option to remain open on Thanksgiving Day, though hours may be reduced), always check hours of operation before heading out
•  Some arenas, swimming pools and sports centres remain open and others don’t depending on the neighbourhood, call 311 for details
• Cinemas
• Montreal Casion
• Montreal Botanical Gardens
• Montreal Science Centre & IMAX Theatre
• Public markets, such as Jean-Talon and Atwater, will be open.
• Marché Bonsecours
• Garbage and recycling pickups generally stay on schedule with rare exceptions, call 311 for details
• All SAQ liquor stores remain open, with the exception of SAQ stores locatied inside a closed shopping mall which don’t have doors located directly via the street or parking lot
• Most music venues, bars and clubs
• Bookstores, flower stores, antique shops and service-based businesses (hair salons, gas stations, manufacturers) remain open at their discretion
• Hospitals and emergency services
• Most spas
• Hotels, resorts and most accommodations
• Parking metres are still in effect
• La Ronde will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Musée d’art contemporain will be closed, but the Pointe-à-Callière Museum will be open from 12 pm to 5 p.m.
• The STM will run on a holiday schedule with modified bus times. Check the changes specific to your route online

What’s Closed:

• Banks
• Most city of Montreal offices
• Municipal court
• Most provincial and federal offices
• Postal service and Canada post offices (private sector locations such as those located in pharmacies may remain open at their discretion)
• Some restaurants (especially since some are usually closed Mondays anyways, always call and check before head out.)
