This group wants Mount Royal to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Non-profit organization Les Amis de la Montagne is currently working to try and have Mount Royal added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The organization believes Montreal’s beloved mountain park should be protected, and that one way of doing so is giving it global historic status. Thus, they have created a campaign called, “We Love our Mountain, Let’s Support UNESCO Status for Mount Royal.”

Before Mount Royal can even be considered by UNESCO, however, it first must be added to the Canadian government’s “Canada’s 2017 Tentative List for World Heritage Sites.”

Les Amis de la Montagne encourages Montrealers to “take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity to act in favour of the mountain’s future, ensuring its protection and safeguarding its natural and cultural riches for generations to come.”

The organization hopes to collect 30,000 signatures by 11:59pm on April 26th.
