An underground art festival has buried itself below Montreal.

Entering its 11th edition, Art Souterrain is free and open to all until March 24.

“The festival is a major Montreal winter event that brightens the daily lives of many thousands of residents and visitors alike,” reads the exhibit’s website.

The festival is actually underground – not underground like a resistance group versus an existing regime but rather, below the surface.

Exhibitions by local and international artists are available to be discovered along a six-kilometre underground route.

This year’s theme challenges art-goers and passersby to consider the notion of “True or False.”

“As our society and behaviours become digitized, access to information has never been easier to obtain, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to discern true from false.” reads Art Souterrain. “Do artists have to tell the ‘truth’? ‘Truth’ is both universal and subjective. It comes from what is natural, what we all recognize as authentic, and what we personally feel and perceive. ‘False’ refers to anything that transgresses what is real.”

Each installation is set in a different underground tunnel in Montreal.

We took to Instagram to collect some of the most thought-provoking pieces from this year’s underground exhibition.
