Montreal police have made their first major cannabis bust targeting illegal trafficking of the drug since it became legal on October 17.

Six people were arrested and released on a promise to appear at a later court date.

Officers from the SPVM’s (Service de police de la Ville de Montréal) organized crime unit, conducted 14 searches and raided four illegal cannabis plantations on Tuesday, November 12.

The SPVM searched locations in Montreal, Brossard, Laval, Mascouche and in the municipalities of Lake Superior, Saint-Barthélemy, Sainte-Ursule and Saint-Donat-de-Montcalm.

In total, police seized:

  • 970 cannabis plants
  • $14,000 in cash
  • One handgun
  • Three vehicles: a compact loader, a bulldozer and a backhoe

According to the police’s news release, the total value of seized property equalled to $1.56 million.

Police claim one of the criminals had a licence to produce and sell medical cannabis but was instead selling the product on the black market.

The operation was carried out with the assistance of the Sûreté du Québec, police services in Laval, Longueuil and Mascouche, as well as with the collaboration of Hydro-Québec.

The SPVM asks anyone with information regarding illegal cannabis to call Info-Crime Montréal (514 393-1133) or file a report online. All information is treated confidentially and anonymously.
