Ladies coding classes for National Learn to Code Day this weekend

Ladies, it’s time to get coding. And if you don’t know how, there’s a new way to learn coming to Montreal for National Learn to Code Day this Saturday.

National non-profit Ladies Learning Code is holding an all-day, absolute beginners’ workshop for 70 women in the Shopify offices on Rue de la Gauchetière.

The English language session, set up in partnership with Shopify, will teach women how to create their own interactive stories, quizzes and games with HTML/CSS code.

There will also be a French-language session, covering exactly the same topics, at Cossette
on Drummond.

“Help us make history!” said Melissa Sariffodeen, Ladies Learning Code’s CEO, in a release.

“Join us in this national movement to empower and equip women with important technical skills to navigate our increasingly digital world.”

According to Ladies Learning Code, all you need to know is how to open up a web browser and do something online, like checking your email.

Women coding across Canada

The Montreal training sessions are just two of more than 25 workshops being held across Canada for National Learn to Code Day on September 24.

More than 1,000 women are expected to take part, with more than 350 volunteer expert developers serving as mentors at each workshop across Canada.

“Computer programming is today’s superpower and we should all have equal access to it,” said Tobi Lütke, Shopify founder and CEO.

Ladies Learning Code is a non-profit aimed at giving women, men and young people the chance to learn beginner technical skills in a social and collaborative way.

Since its inception in 2011, Ladies Learning Code has held over 900 workshops and events and reached over 45,000 learners across the country.

Registration for the English and French language classes is open now, by donation, and includes lunch. You’ll need to bring your own laptop, power cord, and mouse if you like one.
