Don Cherry appeared on-camera for an interview on Tucker Carlson Tonight on Tuesday evening, admitting that he should have used the term “everybody” instead of “you people.”

The 85-year-old was fired from Sportsnet and subsequently, Hockey Night In Canada, a position he held for 38 years, after making xenophobic remarks about immigrants not buying poppies for Remembrance Day.

During his interview with Carlson of Fox News, Cherry said he didn’t mean to say anything hateful but stated, “I stand by what I said and I still mean it.”

Cherry told Carlson that he has the support from the “silent majority,” citing law enforcement as being on his side.

“I should have said, if I had to come through, if i had to been smart, and protected myself, I should have said ‘everybody’ should be wearing a poppy,” said Cherry.

“It’s the two words that got it, as you know, people are sensitive like that,” Cherry told Carlson.

The Ontario-native concluded by saying that Canada has changed “a lot” in the past 38 years but “when you get to the smaller cities, they haven’t changed at all.”
