Canadians are being advised to avoid non-essential travel outside of the country this year, which means heading down south for sandy beaches and hot weather is no longer an option.
While the pandemic has shattered Canadian snowbirds’ dreams of escaping the cold, all is not lost.
Snowbirds can still make the most of a bad situation by choosing a Canadian destination to dodge the winter.
According to Point2Homes, a real estate coverage website, there are 10 Canadian locations that could become snowbird hotspots in 2020 and 2021.

“Although replicating the conditions of a Texan winter in Canada is not possible, spending the tougher months in balmier climate within the country’s borders is,” says the website. “Five cities in Ontario, four in British Columbia, and one in Nova Scotia appear to be the perfect destinations for snowbirds who want to forget about the snow and freezing cold.”
Point2Homes says BC is “the place to be” in Canada during the winter, citing the minimum and maximum temperatures, number of days with snowfall, and quantity of snow as good reasons to heat up in Victoria, Vancouver, Abbotsford, and Kelowna come wintertime.
“With fewer than five days of snowfall, whichever BC city that snowbirds choose will probably allow them to escape the weather conditions they dread the most: snow, wind, humidity and frigid winter days.”

Over on the east coast, Point2 says temperatures are “peaceful” with “relaxing water views” to help get snowbirds through winter, citing Lake Ontario, Toronto, Oshawa, St. Catharines, and Hamilton as ideal winter getaway spots.
Point2Homes says Windsor is a city that “promises some of the highest winter temperatures in all of Canada.”
Alternatively, the website says Halifax is a good option for the “snowbirds who would love to leave everything behind.” Maximum temperatures between December and February reach nearly 3°C in Halifax, complete with “plenty of wooded areas, trails, and beaches.”
