These are Canada's best employers for young people in 2021

Struck out on finding the perfect job? You might not have your eyes set on the right place. Now you’re in luck, Canada’s Top 100 Employers for Young People has released its 2021 list.

This past year has undoubtedly been difficult, especially for young graduates who were more than eager to kickstart their careers. Though hardships faced by the pandemic are understandable, Canadian employers are making more of an effort to help students and graduates at this time.

“Connecting and having opportunities to engage socially has always been an important part of the onboarding process, and never more so than right now,” said Kristina Leung, Senior Editor of Canada’s Top 100 Employers project.

“Some of the employers selected this year had already incorporated interactive and digital elements to their onboarding and orientation programs, which have helped young people integrate and connect, even while working apart.”

According to the release, winners of the 19th annual event, announced by Mediacorp Canada Inc., are chosen based on several factors, including programs and initiatives they offer, tuition assistance, co-op or work-study programs, mentorship, and training programs.

This year’s list proved that quick thinking when shifting to remote working, transitioning onboarding programs to virtual formats, and doubling down on skills development, are important to continuous success.

These finalists also support education and development, such as tuition subsidies for training programs or even courses. Some of these companies also offer younger employees opportunities to develop their skills in “agile and dynamic” environments through case competitions and presentations to company executives that explore new challenges and opportunities.

“During the pandemic, many winners focused on expanding learning and development opportunities for students and young people,” said Stephanie Leung, Assistant Editor at Mediacorp.

“Whether it’s job-specific training, soft skills development, or general interest courses, building capacity enables organizations to be more adaptive and innovative – something that will pay dividends long after the pandemic has ended.”

Over 63,000 job opportunities were created in Canada for students and new graduates last year in summer employment, as well as co-op placements and paid internships.

The winning employers also hired more than 20,000 new graduates for full-time positions and offered up to $20,000 in tuition subsidies.
