Federal officials have said that eligible Canadians can expect to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the end of the summer if distribution goes according to plan.

Canada’s deputy chief public health officer, Dr. Howard Njoo, revealed the vaccine timeline at a press conference on April 15.

“At this point, things are looking pretty good for everyone in Canada being offered their first dose of vaccine I think sometime in the summer, about June, June-ish or so,” Njoo said.

“If all goes well and according to plan in terms of vaccine supply and so on, all Canadians should have been offered quote their second dose by the end of the summer.”

In the meantime, Njoo asked Canadians to “double down” on public health measures such as mask-wearing and physical distancing as COVID-19 virus variants increasingly spread.

While people “may have gotten away” with up to 20 minutes of exposure to the original strain of COVID-19 without getting infected, he warned that the variants are much more contagious and can cause more severe cases of illness.

In addition to following public health measures, Njoo urged all Canadians to get a COVID-19 vaccine when it is their turn in order to ” make this all work.”

“Many millions more [vaccine] doses are coming into the country,” Njoo said. “We are in a good position.”

To date, 9,081,672 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered across the country. Canada has seen 1,087,152 virus cases and 23,445 deaths since the pandemic began.
