Canada provides travel exemption to allow US students to cross border

Jul 27 2020, 7:29 pm

US students studying in Canada will be allowed to cross the border, according to updated COVID-19 travel restrictions from the federal government.

The government’s coronavirus guidelines now list students from the United States as exempt to border restrictions if they have proof that they’re travelling for a non-optional or non-discretionary purpose.

Initially, only international students with a valid study permit or those who were approved for a study permit on or before March 18, 2020 were exempt, but US students will no longer need to follow the same requirement.

According to the guidelines, students coming from the US will have to show border agents a port of entry letter of introduction that shows they were approved for a study permit.

Those coming from any other country must show that they were approved for a study permit on or before March 18, 2020.

All students entering Canada are still required to follow all public health measures and must have a plan to quarantine for 14 days.

The Canada-US border will be closed until at least August 21.

Daily Hive reached out to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for comment but did not hear back by the time of publication.
