Canada Post is adjusting its holiday shipping deadlines due to “unprecedented demand.”

The postal service says that Canadians are “shopping online in record numbers for gifts and other items,” adding that there’s been “a huge influx of customers” who are shipping gifts as an alternative to traditional holiday visits.

Approximately 1.1 million parcels were delivered across Canada this past weekend, with heavy delivery volumes expected to continue throughout this and next week.

“As a result, we’re adjusting our holiday parcel shipping deadlines within Canada and asking Canadians do their shipping and online shopping as soon as possible this week,” says Canada Post in an emailed statement.

The updated holiday shipping deadlines are as follows:

Priority  Xpresspost Flat Rate Box Regular Parcel
Local December 18 December 18 December 18 December 18
Regional  December 18 December 18 December 16 to 18 December 14 to 16
National December 18 December 17 December 11 to 17 December 9 to 15

“Even with processing and delivery moving well with additional resources, there is a limit to what we can safely process and deliver,” Canada Post.

Customers are told to expect delays and to constantly track items for delivery progress.

Since November, Canada Post has added over 4,000 seasonal employees and increased its fleet by more than 1,000 vehicles.
