"ATMs" in Vietnam are dispensing free rice during pandemic

Dispensers that give out rice for free have been set up in several Vietnamese cities during the pandemic to help those who are out of work.

The so-called Rice ATMs have been set up by local donors and business people in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, and will soon be in Da Nang, according to a report from state-run news agency VNA.

People line up six feet apart to use the machines, and when it’s their turn, they hold a bag below a hose that automatically dispenses a couple kilograms of rice.

Vietnam has 268 known cases of COVID-19, but the nation has still imposed heavy physical distancing measures to stop the spread. That’s been hard on many people who have been out of work for the past two weeks.

The Hanoi Times reported that a rice dispenser there will give out rice every day until April 30, or until the rice runs out.
