Is the Great Barrier Reef on your bucket list?
Well, put away your snorkel mask and cancel those scuba lessons, because you can now go see Nemo, Dory, and all the other spectacular biodiversity and marine life through the comfort of an underwater Uber ride.
Queensland, Australia is partnering with Uber to introduce scUber—the world’s very first rideshare submarine giving you a personal tour of the Great Barrier Reef.
Will there be the option of a ScUberXL or a ScUber Pool, you ask? Will prices surge during the heat of backpacker season? Not exactly.
From May 27 to June 18, adventure-seekers will be able to request a scUber ride in select cities on the Queensland coast, and experience a one-hour tour of the world’s largest and longest coral reef through the lens of a small submarine.
Requesting a ride is as simple as opening up your Uber app as early as 7:30 am, choosing the scUber ride option, and selecting “Great Barrier Reef” as your destination.
The scUber experience will cost $3,000 AUD for two riders ($1,500 a piece), and the tour will also include a pick-up and drop-off from your location via the Uber app, a one-hour submarine ride exploring the reef, and a return scenic helicopter ride.
Of course, for a tour like this, availability is quite limited—only one tour will be offered a day.
“At Uber, we believe good things happen when people move – whether that’s by getting people from A to B in their city, or by making dreams come true experiencing the world’s greatest natural wonder, the Great Barrier Reef,” said Susan Anderson, regional general manager of Uber for Australia and New Zealand, in a statement.
In 2018, consumer research identified an underwater submarine ride as the most sought-after travel experience by visitors, according to Leanne Coddington, CEO of Tourism and Events Queensland.
“scUber makes this wish a reality and reaffirms Queensland Tourism’s commitment to providing locals and visitors alike with truly remarkable ways to explore nature’s wonderland,” she said, in the statement.
And for those outside Australia who want to make their own wish a reality, don’t worry— scUber has launched an online global competition for one lucky winner and a friend for a chance win a scUber experience.
To enter, head over to scUber’s website and explain in 25 words or less why you should be the winner of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
