We did some extensive research to test out all the best bars in Paris, because that’s just how dedicated we are to these travel guides. Since there are other important things besides drinking, we have also put together a list of the top things to do, Instagram inspiration, and neighbourhood guide for your trip to Paris.

So without further adieu, here are some of the best places to have a drink in Paris. Santé!

A post shared by Lotje Sodderland (@lotje____) on

Head underground to this cozy and bumpin’ cave in the heart of St. Germain. With a rounded stone ceiling and low-hanging lights, this is an authentic Parisian bar that still retains the charm from when it was created centuries ago. Come here for tunes of every genre, and to try not to spill your wine while dancing. And if the dance floor is full, just dance on the tables – we promise it’s encouraged!

Neighbourhood: St Germain

Mysterious speakeasy: Le Syndicat

Don’t be fooled by its dive bar exterior, this speakeasy is one of the swankiest cocktail bars in the city. Located nearby by Le Mauri7 and Chez Jeanette, come to Le Syndicat for a delish cocktail whipped up with 100% local French ingredients.

Address: 51 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis
Neighbourhood: Faubourg Saint Denis

Speakeasy through a pizza place: Moonshiner

Tucked away behind a pizza parlour Da Vito in Bastille, Moonshiner is a true speakeasy. You’ll feel very in the know as you head through the door and straight into a true 1920s themed intimate bar.

Speakeasy through a laundromat: Lavomatic

A post shared by Kelsey Simon (@kelseysimonsays) on

All speakeasies are cool speakeasies, but let’s be real, a laundry machine door has got to be near the top of the list. This relatively new bar has created quite a buzz and you just have to check it out while you’re in Paree. Just don’t bring your dirty laundry, okay?

Address: 30 Rue René Boulanger
Neighbourhood: Republique

Speakeasy through a taqueria: Candelaria

Accessible through a broom cupboard in a Mexican restaurant (just push through the door at the back), this candlelit cocktail bar will not disappoint. Make sure to get a taco on your way out, or in.

Address: 52 Rue de Saintonge
Neighbourhood: Upper Marais

Speakeasy through a, well, little red door: Little Red Door

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Little Red Door (@littlereddoorparis) on

Located in the oh-so-chic district of Le Marais, this award-winning bar attracts a largely British crowd (the Brits love red doors, what can we say), so come here to enjoy a carefully crafted cocktail in the candlelight with some new friends. The bartenders have animals on their aprons, so you know it’s gonna be a good time.

The lights are dim, the mood is right, the decor is classy, the DJ is on point, and the cocktails are yummm. Come to this basement bar underneath the Beefclub restaurant to satisfy all your speakeasy cravings.

Situated on the popular jazz street, Rue des Lombards, Baiser Salé is bound to get you out of your seat – or at least head bopping with your surrounding Parisians. Make sure to go up the stairs for some awesome jazz. This one will keep you coming back for more, c’est promis!

A few doors down from Le Syndicat and across the street from Le Mauri7, Chez Jeanette is another option for indulging in the Parisian bar scene. Slightly more upscale than Le Mauri7, Chez Jeanette has the feel of a traditional French restaurant and usually draws a bit of a tamer crowd.

If these walls could talk: Hemingway Bar

A post shared by Ritz Paris (@ritzparis) on

Tucked away at the back of the Ritz you can find the old stomping grounds of Ernest Hemingway himself. Oh, to be a fly on the wall and hear what kind of sweet nothings he had murmured to the patrons. If you’re looking for a popping, trendy, chic atmosphere with affordable drinks this is not it (*cough* 30 euro cocktails *cough*) — but if you’re looking for a classy space with literary nostalgia for days, this is all you.

Address: 15 Place Vendôme
Neighbourhood: Palais-Royal

Bumpin’, trendy, chic: Ritz Bar

A post shared by Ritz Paris (@ritzparis) on

Refer to our recommendation above — right across the hall from Hemingway Bar lies another upscale option for drinks, however, this one has a more modern feel to it. Drinks are still not much cheaper than Hemingway Bar (24 euro cocktails), but this swanky space is a perfect place to come if you’re looking to impress someone.

Best vibes: Experimental Cocktail Club

To each their own, but this just may be our favourite bar in Paris — we said it and we’re not taking it back. The internationally staffed bartenders create internationally inspired cocktails, and the tunes are contemporary and liiittt. Vibes en pointe (was that French?)

A few doors down from O’Sullivans you’ll find another party hotspot, coincidentally also named in an Irish fashion (the Irish know how to party, what can we say?). Come here for a mix of Western and French Top 40 and a d-floor that just won’t quit.

A post shared by Alessandro Capitani (@capitani_alessandro) on

You will feel oh-so-exclusive in this mysterious underground club by David Lynch, but don’t expect to get in between 6 pm to 11 pm, when it is members only (we were told “we were not invited here,” fair). Once you get in, it’s an epic place to dance the night away.

Grungy and international: Dirty Dick

Grunge is good in Paris, FYI. All part of the charm. Situated near Moulin Rouge, a bit of a touristy area for nightlife, Dirty Dick is known to attract an international crowd. Get there early if you want a spot at the bar, or stand in the back as you enjoy some fruity concoctions.

Late-night go-to: Glass

Another Moulin Rouge district go-to, equally grungy as the above reco and a bit smelly but hey, that never hurt anyone! Come to Glass for a late-night nightcap, and by nightcap, we mean shot of tequila.

Neighbourhood: Pigalle / Montmartre

Exquisite vibes and views: Le Rooftop

A post shared by Vinita Chaitanya (@vinitachaitanya) on

Located just down from the Arc de Triomphe, this upscale bar and restaurant has a chart-topping view with prices to match. Head to the sixth floor of The Peninsula Hotel and step out to the patio bar for a cocktail while you admire the world’s most well-known landmark atop the charming Parisian rooftops, the Eiffel Tower.

Cozy & picturesque rooftop: Le Perchoir

The Insta ops are through the roof in this rooftop bar (see what we did there?). But for real, we can’t get enough of the cozy setting and stunning views from this trendy bar perched on top of the BHV department store. Any bevvy with a view is a good bevvy in our books.

Modern bistro: Jacopo

A post shared by @chomette_ecf on

Located just off the Champs Élysées, the area is ritzy but the vibe of this bar is modern, young and cool. With neo-industrial decor including exposed cement ceilings, modern light fixture, and marble tables, the affordable prices of Jacopo keep an upbeat crowd coming back for more.

Swingin’ space: Caveau de la Huchette

A post shared by Hadley Orr (@hadthenomad) on

Set in an underground old court and torture chamber, you can find live jazz here any day of the week. One of Paris’ most legendary jazz clubs, you may recognize Caveau de la Huchette from its appearance in La La Land! Dust off your dancin’ shoes and get to lindy hoppin’ as you transport back to the roarin’ twenties.

Address: 5 Rue de la Huchette
Neighbourhood: Latin Quarter

Intimate live music: Caveau des Oubliettes

A post shared by Caveau Des Oubliettes (@caveaudesoubliettes) on

This underground space is where you can find jazz, soul, funk, rock, and world musicians from across the city and beyond coming together for a roof-shaking jam sesh. When we say this place is intimate, we mean it — expect to sit on your neighbour’s lap, or vice versa. We know the French are intimate but we didn’t know they were THAT intimate. Drinks are pricey, but it’s worth it for the authentic vibes.

Address: 52 Rue Galande
Neighbourhood: St. Michel
Phone: +33-1-46-34-23-09
Instagram | Facebook

Underground jazz: 38 Riv

Located on the main drag of Le Marais, Rue de Rivoli, you may just stumble upon this gem of a jazz club — and be pleasantly surprised you did. Grab a glass of wine, pull up a stool, and kick back as some of the city’s best musicians jam out with some soulful tunes into the wee hours of the am.

Neighbourhood: Le Marais

Irish sports bar: Cork and Cavan

With friendly staff, ample TV screens, a canal-side location, and an upbeat atmosphere, this is a great place to come drink a beer and watch the game. As the most recent winners of the World Cup, you know the French will be getting into it!

Address: 70 Quai de Jemmapes, 75010
Neighbourhood: Canal Saint Martin
Phone: +33-1-42-08-11-15

If all else fails, do as the Parisians do and grab a bottle of wine to go drink by the Seine.
