Canada’s annual gathering of polar bears is happening right now (PHOTOS)
Move over, Shark Week. Polar Bear Week is where it’s at, and November 4 – 10 is all about our furry friends from the north.
In addition to live streaming the Polar Bear Cam showing the polar bears’ real-time shenanigans, Polar Bears International hosts an awareness week to teach us all about our native white bears. On its sixth year, Polar Bear Week helps us learn more about polar bears and the threats to their sea ice home because of global warming and the effects of climate change.
The week coincides with the polar bears’ annual gathering on the shores of Hudson Bay, where they wait for the sea ice to form so they can return to hunting seal in the Polar Bear Capital of the World in Churchill, Manitoba.
Scientists estimate that we could see dramatic declines in polar bear numbers by mid-century if we stay on a “business as usual” path with carbon emissions. Polar bears rely on Arctic sea ice for hunting their seal prey. As the global climate continues to warm, Arctic sea ice melts, threatening the polar bears’ future.
Outside of Polar Bear Week, Polar Bears International focuses on conservation efforts year-round that include pushing for carbon-neutral policies and reducing their personal carbon footprints.
If you haven’t gotten your polar bear fix quite yet, Tundra Connections is hosting webcasts and live chats to teach you more about polar bears and how you can help. You can also symbolically adopt a polar bear by donating directly to Polar Bears International.
We will now leave you with a series of cute polar bear photos.
