The 5 most photo-friendly vistas in Canada (and the best IG filters for each)

Jun 27 2019, 11:31 pm

When it comes to travel must-haves, Canada has it all (sorry, we don’t mean to brag, or be politely apologetic).

There are few countries in the world that can boast our mix of epic landscapes, modern and heritage architecture, diverse cities, rich culture, and the ability to play every type of summer (and winter) sport you can imagine.

That’s why it’s no surprise that three Canadian cities made it into the top 10 on a 2018 global ranking of the most livable cities by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Not to mention that fact that this is one incredibly Instagrammable country — it only takes one hashtag ‘canada_gram‘ search to see why.

With that in mind, we’ve teamed up with Maui Jim to celebrate the sunglasses brand’s exclusive collection to Canada by showcasing five of the most photo-friendly vistas in the country and the best Instagram filters to use for each one.

Peyto Lake, Banff

Banff National Park is home to some of the most spectacular glacier-fed lakes in the Canadian Rockies. Instagram is generally flooded with photos of Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, but Peyto is equally as stunning and generally less crowded to visit because it can be accessed from the Icefields Parkway from either Banff or Jasper. The views are best enjoyed during summer without freezing minus temperatures.

Instagram filter: Lark (For even more glacial lake colour vibrancy.)

Niagara Falls, Ontario

Have you seen any of the natural wonders of the world (in real life) yet? The thundering Niagara Falls needs to be next on your list for so many reasons. You can take in vistas of the cascading falls from your hotel, the lower observation deck, right on the water on a cruise, or from the 520 ft. high Skylon Tower. Rest assured that the falls look majestic from every angle.

Instagram filter: Juno (A little more clarity goes a long way.)

Saint-Louis Square, Quebec City

Our love affair with Quebec City runs deep and one visit here almost feels like a trip overseas to Europe. The city is rich in history and dates back to 1608. It sits on the Saint Lawrence River and with plenty of designated cycling areas, it’s easy to spend the day on your bike taking in the views around you. Stroll along narrow cobblestone streets, explore the local boutiques and restaurants and imagine what life was like in old Quebec.

Instagram filter: Gingham (It adds richness to architecture-inspired shots.)

Kathlyn Lake, Smithers

This small town in northwestern BC is approximately halfway between Prince Rupert and Prince George. If you’ve never heard of this beautiful area before, even better — now you’ve got the perfect reason to visit. Take head out kayaking on Kathlyn Lake or take on the trails at Hudson Bay Mountain and relish in the lush surroundings and tranquillity.

Instagram filter: Clarendon (It’s best for all-purpose shots and those that don’t need much perfecting.)

Peggys Cove, Nova Scotia

Coastal province Nova Scotia has a varied landscape with something for every amateur photographer, from the bright streets of Lunenburg to Halifax’ bustling waterfront. The province is home to over 150 lighthouses, but none as photographed as the one standing in the fishing village of Peggy’s Cove. The lighthouse dates back to 1915 and today, it continues to watch over working lobster boats and acts as the most idyllic background for your Instagram photos.

Instagram filter: Valencia (It gives colours and exposure an extra boost.)

If you want to experience these beautiful vistas safely (and in style) this summer, make sure to check out the effective polarized sunglasses that will give you your own Instagram-worthy view 24/7.
