If you’ve never heard of a Potcake, it is the name given to the dogs of the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands. They are a mix of Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, and English Fox Terrier that grow to an average of 40 – 55 pounds. They got their unique name because locals would feed them with the caked-on remains of their cooking pots.
A dog rescue charity called Potcake Place has been rescuing this local breed since 2005. On their own, Potcakes face starvation and a lack of shelter. According to the non-profit, “Potcakes have evolved into a breed which is extremely smart, loyal, and loving” over generations.
The volunteer-run organization faces a constant influx of puppies needing socialization and adoption. To help with socialization, they encourage visitors to stop by their headquarters in Saltmills Plaza and play with their pups. They’ll even let visitors take puppies for a therapeutic beach-side hang to contrast water adventures.
However, their ultimate goal is to find a permanent home for these pups. To do so, they operate a foster program that gives rescued puppies the chance to become acquainted with people, children, and other dogs.

Once puppies have been successfully fostered, they become eligible for Potcake Place’s adoption program. At any given time, there are approximately 50 Potcakes in their foster care center. As dogs become available for adoption, they are posted on Potcake Places’ Facebook page. Those interested in adopting are asked to fill out an adoption form that allows the charity to complete background checks and vet all potential new owners.
Roughly 500 dogs are adopted from the island each year. If you’re over the age of 25, one of these dogs could be yours for free! According to the Potcake Place FAQ page, the only guaranteed cost is the $60 to $250 airline charge for the pup to travel.
Adopted Potcakes come with medical information, a record of shots and vaccines, a Veterinarian health certificate, and an airline-approved carrier bag.

“Each and every Potcake pup that we get through our doors is special to us, and every one that we can place into a wonderful forever home, is one less dying needlessly of neglect, abuse, disease or starvation, or being euthanized,” their website says.
Adopting a dog is a big decision that should be considered carefully. If you’re not able to adopt at this time, there are still other ways to help!
Since owners can’t always collect their Potcake in person and puppies can’t fly on their own, Potcake Place is often on the hunt for couriers. Those willing to carry pups from Providenciales Airport (PLS) to their new owners will be supplied with everything required for the journey. Volunteers will even help with flight check-in! For those passing through Providenciales, volunteering as a courier one great way to help save a pup’s life at no extra cost to yourself.
If your home could use a resident canine, consider adding a Potcake to your squad.
