A west-central Edmonton bridge that has stood for more than 90 years is about to be replaced.

The City of Edmonton says work on the Wellington Bridge, located on 102nd Avenue between Wellington Crescent and Churchill Crescent, will begin Sept. 15.

The closure will shut down 102nd Avenue between 130th Street and 132nd Street, along with the sidewalks on both sides of the bridge and the trail underneath.

The bridge, originally built in 1932, has reached the end of its service life, the City says. It will be replaced with a clear-span girder structure that includes a shared-use path for cyclists and pedestrians on the north side and a sidewalk on the south side.

Some historic elements will be incorporated into the new design, along with decorative streetlamps to complement the character of Glenora.

Environmental mitigation is also part of the plan, including bat boxes that have already been installed to house bats that currently roost in the structure.

The Wellington Bridge carries four lanes of traffic and connects Edmonton’s core to western communities. It spans Ramsey Ravine, where a pathway links Glenora to the river valley.

Transit users will also be affected, according to the City. Route 2 will be detoured during construction, with updates available through ETS Transit Alerts.

The City anticipates the bridge will reopen to traffic by the end of 2026, with landscaping work continuing into 2027.
