VIA Rail cancelling all Canadian trips until further notice

VIA Rail has announced that all of its trips across Canada have been cancelled until further notice.

The company issued a statement on Thursday explaining that they have “no other option but to cancel all of its services on the network, effective immediately, and until further notice.”

VIA Rail was reportedly issued a notice from the company’s infrastructure owner, CN Rail, that says “that they are no longer in a position to fulfill their obligations under the Train Service Agreement.”

Train departures will end at 4 pm ET and any en-route vehicles will be brought to the next closest major train station.

VIA Rail also says that they are providing full refunds for all cancelled trips but due to “the volume of transactions, it may take up to 15 days to receive.”

The Canada-wide cancellation follows Wednesday’s decision to cancel all trips between Toronto-Montreal and Toronto-Ottawa until Friday. The move was made due to a blockade near the town of Belleville that was showing support and solidarity for the Wet’suwet’en Nation in British Columbia.
