Starbucks announces its "largest environmental commitment to date"
Today Starbucks announced its largest environmental commitment to date.
The global coffee chain has made a multi-decade commitment to be a resource-positive company, which means it aspires to give more than it takes from the planet.
“Our aspiration is to become resource positive – storing more carbon than we emit, eliminating waste, and providing more clean freshwater than we use,” says Starbucks Chief Executive Officer Kevin Johnson.

Starbucks has revealed three preliminary targets for 2030:
1. A 50% reduction in carbon emissions in their direct operations and supply chain.
2. 50% of water withdrawal for direct operations and coffee production will be conserved or replenished with a focus on communities and basins with high water risk.
3. A 50% reduction in waste sent to landfill from stores and manufacturing, driven by a broader shift towards a circular economy.
The company also stated that moving forward, they would be “transparent in reporting short- and long-term progress against our goals.”
