Spirit Halloween is haunting defunct businesses a little too early for some Edmontonians’ liking

Spirit Halloween is beginning to open its doors in Edmonton, haunting the vacant storefronts of now-defunct businesses. But with locations opening in early August, not everyone is ready to embrace the spooky season.

Like many seasonal rollouts, Halloween seems to arrive earlier each year, much like Christmas decorations appearing before Remembrance Day or Easter merchandise hitting shelves in February.

The iconic seasonal retailer already has two Edmonton locations open, at 10450 42nd Ave. NW and inside West Edmonton Mall at 8882 170th St. NW. Four more locations are expected to open in the region in the coming weeks.

While plenty of Halloween fanatics are thrilled by the news, others say the rollout feels premature, especially after Edmonton’s wet and unpredictable summer.

When a photo of Spirit Halloween signage being erected over the ghost of a Lowe’s was shared on Reddit, Edmontonians had plenty to say about its extra-early arrival.

“It’s like the first robin of fall,” one joked.

“I’m still waiting for summer to start,” another commenter wrote.

“To be fair, once Edmonton Fringe is done, it usually takes the summer temperatures with it. Where did this year go….? It’s August already,” another said.

“I’M NOT READDDDYYYY,” one complained.

In another thread, however, some were a little more excited about its early arrival.

“I’m sorry summer has been ass, and I’m hyped as f*ck for Halloween,” a commenter said.

“Seeing Halloween pop up doesn’t make me sad or give me the scaries,” one user wrote. “Back to school. That makes me sad. I don’t know why. I work M-F, so it’s not like summer vacation is ending, but I still hate seeing Back to School.”

Another explained what they felt was the allure of the shop.

“Halloween is to a lot of us what Xmas is to other people. Could care less about Xmas, but man oh man do I love me some good spooky stuff. I’ve bought animatronics from them, plus a lot of stuff that lives in the house year-round. Sure, a lot of it’s overpriced, but honestly, where else has so much awesome?” they said.
