A town just outside Edmonton is getting a fancy new recreation centre

Major construction on a new recreation centre is in the cards soon for a town just outside of Edmonton, and it sounds pretty swanky.

The Town of Stony Plain says major construction on a Community Recreation Facility is set to begin the week of March 24.

Initial groundwork took place last year, and with major construction set to begin next week, residents can expect to see significant progress throughout the year, including the installation of the shell of the facility by the end of the construction season.

The town added that construction will continue into next year, and the facility is expected to open to the public in the fourth quarter of 2026.

“This will be a very exciting construction season for the Community Recreation Facility,” said Mayor William Choy in a news release. “The new facility will be a vital space for recreation, wellness, and connection. I’m looking forward to watching this space transform, and I can’t wait to celebrate the opening with our residents in 2026.”

The new recreation centre will feature community spaces, a walking and running track, a turf field, two multi-purpose sports courts, pickleball courts, a six-sheet curling facility, and a concession.

Future expansion of the site was also kept in mind, with the facility being able to accommodate additional recreation and leisure phases in the years to come.

“Breaking ground was a significant moment in 2024, but now we’re entering the exciting phase where this vision starts taking physical form,” said general manager of community and protective services Karl Hill. “By the end of this construction season, residents will be able to see the physical building take shape, a visible reflection of the years of planning and work that have gone into making this project a reality.”

To accommodate construction work, a section of Brickyard Drive, starting at the roundabout on 57 Avenue, will be temporarily closed between March 24 and April 5. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead and follow detour signage.
