Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has issued a statement regarding the Ukrainian plane that crashed in Iran on Wednesday morning, killing 63 Canadians.
“I am deeply saddened by the devastating news that 63 Canadians, including a large number of Albertans, were amongst the 176 passengers aboard Ukrainian International Airlines Flight 752 when it crashed earlier today near Tehran,” Kenney said in the statement.
“On behalf of the Government of Alberta, I extend my deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the passengers.”

It is reported that 27 Edmontonians had been onboard the plane and were killed in the crash.

Kenney called upon Albertans to offer condolences to the Iranian community in Edmonton following the devastating news.
“Alberta has been enriched by a small but dynamic and highly educated Iranian community. This is a terrible day for them, and I am sure that all Albertans join with me in expressing our condolences to the entire community, which is affected by this disaster,” he said in the statement.
“I thank the Government of Canada for pressing for an investigation into this crash, and offering support to the victims’ families.”
The Government of Canada issued a travel advisory for Iran in the hours after the crash, warning Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to Iran due “to the volatile security situation, the regional threat of terrorism and the risk of arbitrary detention.”
