Vasily Podkolzin is heading back to Russia following the tragic and sudden death of his father.

“The Oilers extend heartfelt condolences to Podkolzin and his family during this difficult time,” the Edmonton Oilers said in a media release.

The 24-year-old Moscow native is understandably taking a leave of absence to be with his family.

Alexander Podkolzin passed away Tuesday night, the same day Vasily signed the largest contract of his NHL career.

“Thanks for all support from the teammates, [Edmonton Oilers], all hockey community and of course, friends and family,” Podkolzin said Wednesday evening via Instagram.

Drafted by the Vancouver Canucks 10th overall in 2019, he established himself as an everyday NHL player after a trade to Edmonton last year.

“I just love hockey. I just love my work,” Podkolzin told reporters in Edmonton after his new contract was announced. “I love what I do, and when I have the opportunity to play with the best players in the world, that’s awesome.”
