We love Accidental Beach, Edmonton’s unofficial downtown beach that, as the name suggests, came about entirely by accident.
The sandy shoreline emerges when water levels in the North Saskatchewan River are low, and is one of central Edmonton’s favourite places to spend a hot summer day. It also offers some of the city’s most unique views, with the downtown skyline rising above the floor of the river valley.
Before you head out, though, there are a few things to know. Accidental Beach is not an official City of Edmonton park or beach, so visitors access it at their own risk. Water levels can change quickly, and while it may be tempting to cool off in the river, the North Saskatchewan has strong currents that can be dangerous.
With that in mind, here’s everything you’ll want to pack for the most Edmonton beach day you can have.
A good pair of shoes

The walk down to the beach is pretty steep, and flip-flops can be a recipe for a wipeout. If you’re planning to be extra beachy, toss your sandals in your tote and wear a sturdier pair of shoes until you hit the sand.
A (full) can of bug spray

Edmonton had a LOT of rain to begin the summer, so naturally, mosquito season has arrived in full force. Between the cool, damp, shaded conditions around Accidental Beach and the nearby vegetation, you’ll be prime buffet material if you forget the bug spray.
Plenty of hydration

When we say amenities are limited, we mean limited. This isn’t the kind of beach where you can stroll over to a concession stand when you get thirsty. Once you’re set up, you’re on your own, so pack plenty of water (and snacks, for that matter). Edmonton gets seriously hot in the summer, and dehydration is much less fun than a beach day.
Something to sit on

Because you’re literally hanging out on a river sandbar, don’t be surprised if the ground is a little damp. A picnic blanket with a waterproof backing is your best friend here, especially if you’re not planning on getting soggy. Better yet, bring a camping chair and skip the issue altogether.
Something to do

Of course, soaking up the sun is great, but you can only lie there for so long. Whether it’s a football, volleyball, frisbee, a book or a deck of cards, bring something to keep the beach day going.
