Edmonton Oilers trade Viktor Arvidsson to Boston Bruins

The Edmonton Oilers have cleared up a significant amount of cap space just an hour before the free agent market opens.

Following weeks of speculation, the Oilers have finally traded Viktor Arvidsson in a deal with the Boston Bruins. In exchange, Edmonton will receive a 2027 fifth-round draft pick and will not retain any salary.

Getting out of Arvidsson’s contract clears up $4 million in cap space, allowing Oilers GM Stan Bowman to be more active in free agency.

The Oilers officially announced the trade just minutes before the free agent market opened.

The 32-year-old Arvidsson initially signed a two-year deal with the Oilers last summer, with high expectations that he could be a reliable top-six producer. However, despite spending most of his time stapled to Leon Draisaitl’s wing, the Swede could not produce at a high rate, notching just 15 goals and 27 points in 67 games.

Further, he became a regular healthy scratch during Edmonton’s run to the Stanley Cup Final and wasn’t in the lineup for the penultimate Game 6 against the Florida Panthers. It was clear a change of scenery was in store for Arvidsson, and he will get that in Boston.

That contract included a no-movement clause, which Arvidsson waived to be traded to Boston.

The challenge for Bowman will be to utilize this space effectively. Edmonton now has about $4.5 million in cap space to spend in free agency. That doesn’t appear to be enough to land a big fish like Brock Boeser.

It’s a good move to clear up cap space, but the more important aspect is how the Oilers will use that newfound space.
