Edmonton Oilers trade addition Frederic gave himself a funny nickname

Trent Frederic has officially arrived in the Alberta capital after the Edmonton Oilers traded for him earlier this week.

The 27-year-old hulking forward was at Rogers Place this morning to meet with the team ahead of tonight’s game against the Montreal Canadiens. Frederic, who is still injured, won’t be making his Oilers debut but he did take some time to talk with local media.

Frederic was asked about which position he envisions himself playing in the Oilers forward group to which he gave a pretty funny answer, revealing a nickname that he has for himself in the process.

“I made a joke that I’m ‘Freddy fill-in’,” Frederic laughed. “I play left, right, and centre. Wherever they need me, I’ll try and play.

“I’ve played so many different positions the last couple of years I don’t even know what I prefer anymore. Just prefer playing with good guys and good players and that’s all that matters.”

The Oilers were always on Frederic’s radar as a team he would want to play on if he were to be traded from the Boston Bruins. Not only that, his brother had been hyping up Edmonton as a potential trade destination for Frederic.

Frederic told reporters that he believes he can win a Stanley Cup with this team.

“I think he thinks this would give me the best chance of getting the big dream,” Frederic said with a smile. “He watches a lot of hockey and this is a team a lot of people like to watch.”

At six-foot-three and 221 lbs, Frederic is now the most physically intimidating player on the Oilers roster. He certainly stands above all the forwards with fellow trade acquisition Max Jones being one of only two other players in that group that stands that tall.

The other player is veteran Corey Perry, who Frederic has already dropped the gloves against earlier this season. That seems to be water under the bridge now as Perry sent him a quick text welcoming him to the Oilers.

“He sent a nice, funny text. That’s a cool text to get,” Frederic told reporters. “How he can bring it, how long he’s brought it, and how he’s evolved… it’s pretty amazing.”

There is no word yet on when Frederic will be healthy enough to make his debut with his new team. He briefly needed a walking boot last week, but he is out of it now. While he won’t be on the ice tonight, Oilers fans can expect Jones to make his debut.
