Free agent defenceman Tyson Barrie is heading west, to the Edmonton Oilers, after signing a one-year, $3.75 million contract.

Barrie heads to Edmonton following a disappointing season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he never seemed to fit in — although he still put up 39 points in 70 games. That’s a far cry from his previous two seasons with the Colorado Avalanche though, where he put up 59 and 57 points, respectively.
The offensive-minded blueliner should rack up points on the Oilers’ potent power play, which of course features Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
The Vancouver Canucks were also interested in the Victoria, BC native, but Barrie would not have received the same opportunities on the power play with Quinn Hughes already in place.
The Leafs have already replaced Barrie’s spot on defence with T.J. Brodie, who they signed on Friday.
Barrie reportedly turned down more money to play in Edmonton, even declining a $6 million offer from a mystery team according to TSN’s Frank Seravalli.
