Edmonton Oilers reveal bold new Pride Night logo

The Edmonton Oilers are set to host their annual Pride Night game on Wednesday night with a new logo and several specialty jerseys.

Over the past few seasons, Edmonton has used a rainbow-coloured version of their classic logo for Pride Night, but they have chosen a different direction this time around. They have enlisted the talents of local designer Matthew Brownoff to create a bold new direction for the night.

The result is a beautiful new expressive logo that is sure to catch the eye when fans come to Rogers Place to watch the Oilers take on the Dallas Stars tomorrow night. It’s a shame that neither Connor McDavid nor Leon Draisaitl will get a chance to participate due to injury.

“The core theme of my design is expression, encouraging individuals to openly express their authentic selves — embracing love, creativity, and individuality as the core elements of pride,” said Brownoff in a release.

“My typographic interpretation of the Oilers logo is meant to be fun and bold, with the core of this logo concept being inspired by pop art. Bold colours and graphic elements are used to speak to the representation, inclusivity, and love within the 2SLGBTQl+ community in Edmonton.”

Alongside the logo, the Oilers have announced plans to auction off new team-signed Pride Night jerseys that will feature six different colours. Those jersey designs, however, were not revealed by the team.

The new logo will be featured around Rogers Place for the game and the team will be highlighting several community groups and leaders who have made a positive impact on the 2SLGBTQI+ community.

“Our annual Celebrating Pride game is about more than just celebrating, it’s about honouring community leaders who have dedicated their lives to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in Oil Country,” said Tim Shipton, the executive vice president of external affairs with OEG.

That was not the only Pride-related announcement made today by the Oilers. Apart from their Pride Night plans, Edmonton also confirmed that the annual Pride Cup will be making a return to the Ice District this August.

“Through events like Pride Cup, the Oilers Celebrating Pride game, and organizations like Pride Tape that was established right here in Edmonton, we continue to work towards a future where everyone in Oil Country can belong in the game of hockey, and be proud of who they are and who they love,” Shipton added.

Ex-Oilers goaltender Ben Scrivens will be on the main concourse taking photos with fans during tomorrow’s game and the 50/50 proceeds will be going toward MacEwan University’s Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity.

Edmonton’s team store will also be selling a variety of Pride-themed merch featuring the new logo on its website.
