The Edmonton Oilers have made their first round of cuts with training camp set to open up later this week.

With Monday being the last day of the Oilers’ annual rookie camp, management has opted to slim down the roster heading into main camp. A total of 25 players attended this year’s rookie camp, with the bulk of them playing in a pair of games against the Calgary Flames’ rookie squad last weekend.

The Oilers lost both of those games, albeit close, by a score of 6-5 on Friday at Rogers Place and 5-4 on Sunday night at Calgary’s Saddledome.

With the rookie camp coming to a close, Edmonton announced that the following seven players were released from their respective tryouts:

  • Dru Krebs (D)
  • Andrew O’Neill (F)
  • Jaxen Adam (D)
  • Carson Woodall (D)
  • Parker Von Richter (D)
  • Hyde Davidson (D)
  • Josh Banini (G)

All seven of these players were invited by the organization to attend this year’s rookie camp and were not drafted or signed as prospects within the organization.

The bulk of the cut players were defencemen, with the most prominent being Dru Krebs, a former sixth-round pick of the Washington Capitals in 2021. He was the sole player on a professional tryout at this year’s camp. The rest were released from their amateur tryouts.

Josh Banini was the only goalie invited to participate in the rookie camp as he skated alongside signed Oilers prospects such as Samuel Jonsson, Nathanial Day, and Connor Ungar. The 19-year-old Edmonton native spent last season in the WHL with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The only camp invite that has not been released is Rhett Pitlick, who appeared in six games with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors. It remains to be seen if Pitlick sticks around for the Oilers’ main training camp, which is set to get underway with medicals on Wednesday.
