Edmonton Oilers have placed veteran goalie Calvin Pickard on waivers

The Edmonton Oilers have decided on their goaltending duo moving forward.

After weeks of running three goaltenders on the roster, the Oilers officially placed Calvin Pickard on waivers on Sunday afternoon. This marks the first time that the 33-year-old has been removed from the NHL roster since initially being called up to replace Jack Campbell during the 2023-24 season.

This move is a bit of a risk for the Oilers, as they could lose Pickard for nothing if another team opts to claim the journeyman goaltender.

Pickard managed to do a lot during his three seasons in the Alberta capital. He wound up being a more-than-servicable backup goaltender throughout his Oilers tenure, and even managed to start some in some high-pressure playoff games, including Game 5 of last year’s Stanley Cup Final.

If this is it for Pickard in Edmonton, he will have ended his Oilers stint with a 39-23-4 record and a .896 save percentage. In the playoffs, Pickard shone with an 8-2 record and .892 SV%.

He struggled to keep the net this season, posting a 5-6-2 record in 13 starts while maintaining a disappointing .871 SV%. He had not started a game for Edmonton since Jan. 8 against the Winnipeg Jets.

This signals that the Oilers are comfortable moving forward with a goaltending tandem of Tristan Jarry and Connor Ingram for the remainder of the season. A difficult decision will have to be made in the AHL as well, if Pickard clears, as both Matt Tomkins and rookie sensation, Connor Ungar, have been playing spectacular hockey.

Pickard had an incredible run with the Oilers and hit several incredible career milestones while playing in Edmonton, but every good thing must come to an end at some point.
