The news continues to get worse for the Edmonton Oilers.
As the team looks to rebound after an embarrassing 9-1 loss over the weekend, they will have to line up against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night without one of their best players. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins missed practice on Sunday morning due to a regular maintenance day. Yet, after Monday morning’s pre-game skate, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch revealed that the veteran was dealing with an injury and will miss multiple games.
Edmonton has already moved Nugent-Hopkins to the IR, and he is expected to miss about a week. The type of injury has not been revealed.
“Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is not playing [due to] injury,” Knoblauch said. “He’ll be out about a week, we assume.”

Nugent-Hopkins has been one of the bright spots for this team despite another putrid start to the season. The 32-year-old has notched five goals and 16 points through the first 15 games of the season, placing him behind just Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in team scoring.
He has also proved to be a bit of a Swiss army knife throughout the roster, having taken turns playing centre on the second and third line, as well as a winger on the first. The Nuge is also a fixture on both special teams units, so his presence will be sorely missed.
If he misses a week, that would rule him out for the next four games, with a potential return coming as early as next Monday against the Buffalo Sabres. A solid return date, however, has not been confirmed by the team.
Moving RNH to IR will make room for Mattias Janmark to make his season debut. The Swede has missed the first 15 games of the season with an injury he sustained in the preseason. There have been trade rumours involving Janmark that could still come to fruition, but he will suit up for the Oilers on Monday night.
Nobody said that getting back on track would be easy for Edmonton, but this news certainly doesn’t help their chances.
