The Edmonton Oilers can’t seem to get healthy.
It was more bad news on Monday night against the Detroit Red Wings, as Zach Hyman exited the game midway through the second period after a collision with Andreas Englund. The play itself didn’t look like anything special, and it wasn’t immediately obvious how Hyman got hurt.
A closer look at the play, however, showed that the veteran forward’s head banged against the glass, and he clutched at his head as he fell to the ice. Hyman was then removed from the game, likely due to concussion protocol, and did not return.
Head coach Mike Babcock was asked about Hyman after the game, but did not have an update.
“We’re hoping to get guys back, not losing more guys,” Babcock said. “You guys saw what I saw… Any time you get injured twice, it’s not a good sign, obviously.
“He’s a very important piece for us, so that wasn’t fun to watch that.”

Colton Dach took Hyman’s spot on the second line with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Kasperi Kapanen, and made the most of his opportunity. Dach notched a late go-ahead goal in the third period, but it wasn’t enough to get the win, as the Oilers lost 4-3 in the shootout.
The Oilers are already missing Mattias Ekholm, Matt Savoie, Jason Dickinson, and Devon Levi due to injury. Hyman missed six games early in the season with another injury as well, and it looks like a second stint on the IR could be in the cards.
Edmonton has managed to stave off those injuries with a solid 8-2-2 start, but it’s becoming more and more obvious that the team is in dire need of some reinforcements. The Oilers have seen their play slip over the past week or so, and will need to get players back healthy if they want to correct course.
Depth scoring remains a concern, although the team got a couple of goals from Isaac Howard and Dach on Monday night.

The good news is the Oilers are still in great shape in the NHL standings, waking up on Tuesday morning atop the Pacific Division and third in the league with 18 points. It’s a good position to be in, but they can’t get too comfortable.
They’ll either need some depth players to step up big time or hope that they can get back to full strength without suffering any more injuries.
