Edmonton Oilers give good-news injury update on Zach Hyman

The Edmonton Oilers have struggled out of the gate, but help is on the way.

Zach Hyman would usually be playing on Edmonton’s top line beside Connor McDavid, but the 33-year-old has been sidelined with a wrist injury through the first seven games of the season so far.

This isn’t a new development, having suffered the injury during Game 6 of last year’s Western Conference Final, but the recovery has been a long one. Now, it seems like Hyman is in the final stretch of that process.

Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch gave a good-news update on Hyman’s condition and provided a timeline for him to return.

“Zach is very upbeat and cheerful because he’s joined the team. He’s part of our practices,” Knoblauch said. “I believe we’re playing Nov. 1, whether it’s that day, but we hope it’s early November.”

The Oilers have not been able to run the top-six that they’ve wanted this season because of Hyman’s absence. This update shows that they are on track with their original timeline of early November that they put out before the season got underway.

If that holds, that would set Hyman up to return to the lineup as early as Nov. 1 against the Chicago Blackhawks. Edmonton has five games between now and then, which would put Hyman at missing at least the first 12 games of the season.

In the meantime, the Oilers have been experimenting with different players in that top-line spot. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have been put together for much of the start of the season, with players like Trent Frederic, Vasily Podkolzin, and now Matt Savoie taking turns auditioning on the wing.

Hyman scored 27 goals with the Oilers last season and had an additional five in the playoffs before getting injured. With the team having so much difficulty putting the puck in the net this season, getting him back in the lineup should be a big boost for the club.
