On Sunday night, the Edmonton Oilers lost Game 4 against the Anaheim Ducks in dramatic fashion.
Ryan Poehling’s controversial OT goal was the dagger, giving the Ducks a 3-1 stranglehold on the series as things shift back to Edmonton for Game 5. Oilers players were not happy with the goal counting and shared their thoughts after the game, and it seems like their fans feel the same way.
The question was whether or not the puck conclusively crossed the goal line, and if the officials were in the right position to say it was a good goal before the play was reviewed.
THE GOAL STANDS š¦

A large number of Oilers fans agreed with the players and thought that there was no conclusive evidence that the puck completely crossed the goal line. It may look like it does on replay, but Tristan Jarry’s skate blocks out half the puck.
The inconclusivity of the replay had a lot of Oil Country thinking the goal shouldn’t have counted, regardless of the initial on-ice call.
Worst call Iāve ever seen. In the history of the NHL this is it. Trash pic.twitter.com/Yh0L15DIM1

“That’s a f*cking brutal call,” one fan said on X.
With that skate covering some of the puck there was no view to 100% say it was in.. to end a critical Game 4 on that takes the mind to a dark place @NHL .. no goal was easily explainable.. a goal not so much.. So here we are.. who was in on the fix?

“No one signalled a goal, no one blew the whistle because every zebra was 50 feet away and never saw it. They huddle at centre ice and THEN call it a goal – that is some shady sh*t. Sure, the puck looks over the lineā¦but it’s not definitive. That’s why people are pissed,” said another fan.
No proof the puck crossed the line. On ice call was bad. They didnāt see any visual evidence. Bad call

“Unless you have X-ray vision, you cannot definitively confirm it’s over the line,” said another Oilers fan on X.
And they top if off waiting for over a minute to even MAKE A CALL (good goal) so they could say can't overturn it š¤·āāļøš¤·āāļø
That was 100% inconclusive when the puck was covered, @Sportsnet panel said so.
We get it Bettman, you got what you wanted tonight. "Grow the game!" https://t.co/kK1gIQQTtu

“The puck being over the line has nothing to do with it. Itās the fact that it was called a goal on the ice. There’s no way in hell any of those refs saw a thing. They assumed. If they didnāt know for sure, it should have been called no goal. There is no accountability. Zero,” said another angry Oilers fan.
You’re not wrong but there isn’t one ounce of me who thinks the Oilers would have gotten the same call. And nothing you say will change my mind.
There’s zero chance that’s a goal against Florida or Vegas.

It’s a tough play and one that will push the Oilers to the brink of elimination going into Game 5 on Tuesday night. This will leave quite a sour taste in the mouths of the Edmonton faithful if the Oilers find themselves eliminated.
The puck likely did cross the line completely, but Jarry’s skate blocking out the space between the puck and the goal line will keep this a furious debate. It’s certainly one of the more controversial and consequential moments of the Stanley Cup Playoffs so far.
Do you think the goal should have counted?
