Edmonton Oilers fans sound off on social media after controversial OT goal

On Sunday night, the Edmonton Oilers lost Game 4 against the Anaheim Ducks in dramatic fashion.

Ryan Poehling’s controversial OT goal was the dagger, giving the Ducks a 3-1 stranglehold on the series as things shift back to Edmonton for Game 5. Oilers players were not happy with the goal counting and shared their thoughts after the game, and it seems like their fans feel the same way.

The question was whether or not the puck conclusively crossed the goal line, and if the officials were in the right position to say it was a good goal before the play was reviewed.

A large number of Oilers fans agreed with the players and thought that there was no conclusive evidence that the puck completely crossed the goal line. It may look like it does on replay, but Tristan Jarry’s skate blocks out half the puck.

The inconclusivity of the replay had a lot of Oil Country thinking the goal shouldn’t have counted, regardless of the initial on-ice call.

“That’s a f*cking brutal call,” one fan said on X.

“No one signalled a goal, no one blew the whistle because every zebra was 50 feet away and never saw it. They huddle at centre ice and THEN call it a goal – that is some shady sh*t. Sure, the puck looks over the line…but it’s not definitive. That’s why people are pissed,” said another fan.

“Unless you have X-ray vision, you cannot definitively confirm it’s over the line,” said another Oilers fan on X.

“The puck being over the line has nothing to do with it. It’s the fact that it was called a goal on the ice. There’s no way in hell any of those refs saw a thing. They assumed. If they didn’t know for sure, it should have been called no goal. There is no accountability. Zero,” said another angry Oilers fan.

It’s a tough play and one that will push the Oilers to the brink of elimination going into Game 5 on Tuesday night. This will leave quite a sour taste in the mouths of the Edmonton faithful if the Oilers find themselves eliminated.

The puck likely did cross the line completely, but Jarry’s skate blocking out the space between the puck and the goal line will keep this a furious debate. It’s certainly one of the more controversial and consequential moments of the Stanley Cup Playoffs so far.

Do you think the goal should have counted?
