Former Edmonton Oilers defenceman Cody Ceci has been traded for the second time in less than a year.

Ceci, who the Oilers dealt to the San Jose Sharks in the offseason, is part of a package heading to the Dallas Stars.

The 31-year-old Ceci signed a four-year contract with the Oilers ahead of the 2021-22 season. He wound up spending three years in Edmonton, where he often played in a top-four role but was often heavily criticized by the fan base. Management elected to trade him and a third-round to the Sharks in exchange for Ty Emberson.

This current deal seems to be focused around Sharks forward Mikael Granlund, who is leading the Sharks with 45 points through 52 games. Both he and Ceci are set to become UFAs this offseason.

As per TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Sharks will be receiving a first-round pick, along with a conditional fourth-round selection that can become a third. The conditions surrounding what can turn the pick into a third-round selection have yet to be confirmed.

Ceci, who has recorded four goals and 15 points through 54 games, is averaging 21:46 minutes in ice time, the second most amongst all Sharks players. He’ll help add some depth to the Stars’ back end, which is of the upmost importance for them right now following an injury to Miro Heiskanen that is expected to keep him out through the 4 Nations Face-Off break.

This trade will give Ceci another opportunity to compete for a Stanley Cup, which he and the Oilers were just one win away from doing last season. The Stars, who the Oilers eliminated in last year’s Western Conference Final, are a serious contender once again. They currently sit second in the Central Division with a 33-17-1 record.
