Oilers' Carrick fined by NHL for below-the-belt slash in Game 2

From questionable hits to headlocks, things got pretty ugly between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final.

One infraction, though, carries additional consequences.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced on Tuesday that Oilers forward Sam Carrick had been fined $2,213.54, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for slashing Florida defenceman Dmitry Kulikov towards the end of the Panthers’ 4-1 victory on  Monday.

Carrick was assessed a slashing penalty and game misconduct on the play for hitting Kulikov in the groin area with his stick. The incident occurred with two minutes left in the third period.

Now down 2-0 in the series, the Oilers will hope for a change of luck and do their best to rally together when the best-of-seven heads to Edmonton this week.

“It’s supposed to be hard, it’s supposed to be difficult,” Edmonton captain Connor McDavid told reporters postgame on Monday night. “I’m excited to see what our group is made of, I’m excited for our group to come together, and I’m excited to see us fight through adversity. I’m looking forward to people doubting us again.”

Puck drop for Game 3 at Rogers Place is set for 5 pm PT/6 pm MT/8 pm ET.
