Town southwest of Edmonton eyeing new $10M sports dome

People in a town southwest of Edmonton could soon have a new indoor space to run, throw, and play, with Drayton Valley exploring plans for a 60,000 sq. ft. sports dome.

The proposed facility would offer year-round recreational opportunities, with plans for a soccer pitch, basketball and volleyball courts, pickleball courts, and change rooms.

According to an infographic posted by the Drayton Valley Community Foundation (DVCF), the project is still in the planning stages. The design has yet to be finalized, and the foundation says there will soon be an opportunity for public consultation.

“We hope you’re just as excited about the possibilities as we are, and we look forward to working together to bring this vision to life,” the post reads.

If approved, the dome would likely be built next to the existing Ricochet Aquatic Centre, pending confirmation.

The estimated project cost is up to $10 million, with $6 million expected to come from government grants and private sponsorship. The remaining $4 million would be split between the town and county.

In late September, the DVCF announced it had secured $1.5 million through the Alberta government’s Active Communities Initiative Grant to bring the sports dome to Drayton Valley.

If the project moves ahead, construction could begin in Spring 2027, with the dome targeting completion by fall or early winter that year.

Drayton Valley is approximately 130 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.
