Moving to Alberta is red-hot and Calgary is the leading Canadian city

People are flocking to live in Alberta, and Calgary is leading the country in a new report detailing where people are moving.
According to recent data from moving company U-Haul, do-it-yourself movers are packing their lives up and heading to Alberta’s two largest cities, Calgary and Edmonton, which are also the top two growth cities in Canada.
Calgary is no stranger to welcoming folks looking to start fresh– YYC was the #1 U-Haul growth city for 2023 as well.
U-Haul calculates growth cities by each city’s net gain or loss of one-way equipment from
customer transactions in a calendar year.
Alberta markets like Calgary, Edmonton, and Medicine Hat attracted families with their jobs, low taxes, and affordable housing. Of all U-Haul customers coming and going in Alberta, 51.2% of traffic was incoming and 48.8% was outgoing in 2024.
“People are moving to Alberta because of the opportunities and investments being made in the province,” stated Naga Chennamsetty, U-Haul area district vice president. “The cost of living is not as bad as compared to some other provinces.”
Chennamsetty added that with the Canadian Rockies in the province, residents have lots of recreational activities. And it’s not really international migration that brings people to Alberta — it’s interprovincial migration.
According to Statistics Canada, residents of Ontario and British Columbia have been flocking to Alberta, with the province seeing the largest net gain in interprovincial migration in the third quarter of 2024, adding 10,810 people.
