McDavid and Matthews' cryptic tweets at one another have Oilers and Leafs fans confused

Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs fans are sharing confusion over two tweets from their team’s top stars.
Yesterday afternoon, Connor McDavid posted his first tweet in nearly a year and tagged Leafs forward Auston Matthews.
.@AM34 crossbar and in, let’s see it

As you would imagine, many took to X to joke that this meant McDavid was planning on joining his hometown team.

After a bit of a delay, Matthews hopped on X this morning in what was his first tweet in several months to respond to the Oilers captain.
.@cmcdavid97 bet you can’t hit a billboard from 50 feet

Once again, fans began speculating what this interaction between two of the game’s best players could mean.

— SnizzBone, PHD 𝓫𝓸𝓸𝓴𝓪 𝓫𝓸𝓸𝓴𝓪 𝔂𝓪𝓪𝓪 (@Swedish_Dman) January 3, 2025
While not confirmed, this does appear to be some sort of partnered advertisement, and it seems as though it may have something to do with McDonald’s.
something’s about to change the game forever 🏒
— McDonald's 🇨🇦 (@McDonaldsCanada) January 2, 2025
What exactly this all means has yet to be confirmed, but any sort of advertisement featuring McDavid and Matthews is one that is sure to be successful.
Both McDavid and Matthews have been some of the main faces of the NHL for several seasons now. The Oilers superstar is having himself yet another phenomenal season, with 15 goals and 54 points through 34 games. Matthews has had a lesser impact due to injury but has still amassed 11 goals and 23 points through 24 games.
A better idea of what McDavid and Matthews are insinuating with their tweets should become public knowledge soon, but until then, fans on X will continue to have fun guessing what it could be.
