Some people may go on a shopping spree or book a trip right after learning they won the lottery, but one Canadian decided to hit the links after becoming a multimillionaire.

Calgary, Alta., resident Ray Born is $2 million richer after winning the March 28 Western 649 jackpot, and he learned of his win bright and early after getting up to watch sports.

Born told Lotto Spot that he enjoys getting up at 2:30 a.m. to check out some sports and his lottery tickets as his morning ritual, and after that, he usually goes golfing on the weekends.

Born’s eyes were wide open when he saw the selection numbers on his Western 649 ticket matched the winning ones on the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) website. He immediately woke his wife to tell her the news.

“She said, ‘Surely you aren’t still going golfing now?!’” he laughed. “I said, ‘I sure am!’ and I got an 84!”

As for what he plans to do with his newfound windfall, some topics involving his favourite game came to mind.

“I’d like to get a membership at a golf club and my own golf cart,” he said. “I’ve also been thinking about a trip to Scotland – that’s where golf was born! I’d love to golf there!”

In addition to the golf dreams, Born is also aiming to take his family out for a nice steak dinner and is also hoping to retire, booking an appointment with a financial adviser to discuss his options.

Born purchased his winning Western 649 ticket from Tucker’s Food Store at 4004 26th St. SE in Calgary. He won his prize by matching all six numbers in the March 28 Western 649 draw: 18, 21, 39, 43, 46, and 48.
