Kings fans heckle McDavid and Draisaitl outside arena after Oilers loss

For the first time in a long time, LA Kings fans have something to be proud of over the Edmonton Oilers.

A dominant 6-2 victory in Game 2 gave the Kings a 2-0 series lead over the Oilers on Wednesday night, and their fans feel good about it. This is the first time in the last four seasons that L.A. has been able to mount a multi-game lead over Edmonton.

The confidence is so high that some Kings fans heckled Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl after the game as the superstars returned to their hotel.

“Skinnnnnner,” one fan shouted at the two Oilers as they walked by.

This wasn’t a personal insult at McDavid or Draisaitl; rather, it was at their teammate, goaltender Stuart Skinner. The Kings have figured out the 26-year-old netminder, having scored 11 goals on him in just two games.

The L.A. faithful have been taunting Skinner throughout both games so far and even went as far as chanting “We want Skinner” after the Oilers decided to pull him in favour of Calvin Pickard late in Game 2.

Skinner now ranks dead last among playoff goalies when it comes to goals saved above expected (GSAx) at -4.7. The next closest goalie is Ottawa Senators’ Linus Ullmark at -3.7.

Oilers players have tried to take the heat off their goaltender, citing poor defensive play leaving Skinner out to dry, but there comes a point where you have to get a save. Edmonton simply hasn’t been getting a save in this series.

McDavid and Draisaitl handled the heckling like the professionals they are, with the Oilers captain smirking and walking along. Draisaitl paid no mind to the fans and walked right past them.

The hope now is that Edmonton can head back home and string together a few wins to help bring these fans back down to earth. If they lose one at home, it will only increase the confidence of the Kings’ fanbase.
