Partial closure in place at Edmonton's iconic Keillor Point
The City of Edmonton says record-breaking rain this summer has caused some deterioration of the slopes that surround the Keillor Point viewing area.
Located at 74th Avenue and Saskatchewan Drive, Keillor Point (known informally as “The End of the World”) is a former section of Keillor Road. The site became a popular River Valley trail destination and viewpoint following the road’s closure in the 1990s. Its official name, Keillor Point, was proposed by the community and approved by the City of Edmonton Naming Committee to honour the area’s history.
Since construction of the viewing platform in 2018, regular geotechnical inspections and monitoring have confirmed continued deterioration of the slopes due to erosion and localized instability. In 2026, record-breaking rain in June and July accelerated this deterioration. The current viewing platform is supported by the remnants of a pile wall originally installed to stabilize a portion of Keillor Road. The extreme conditions this summer caused additional loss of support for the structure.
For public safety, the City has installed barricades and signs to prevent access to the extended portion of the viewing area and platform. The City will continue to regularly inspect the site to monitor conditions and public safety risks. Further engineering work will help inform longer-term options for the viewing area.
The main trail and viewpoint remain open and safe for public use, while the extended lookout structure is closed until further notice. Temporary barriers and warning signs are in place around the closed area. Permanent signs with additional information will be installed soon.
Keillor Point isn’t the only spot in Edmonton feeling the impact of a rainy summer. It was recently announced that a park undergoing a bit of a makeover has been hit with a delay thanks to Mother Nature.
